Why should I come to UW-Madison to take part in the PGSRP?
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has one of the strongest biological research communities in the US. Worldclass faculty, staff, graduate students, and visiting scientists from around the world work in state-of-the-art laboratories unraveling the scientific mysteries surrounding plant genomics. Specifically, the UW is recognized world-wide as a leader in plant genomics research, with over two dozen faculty in several different departments focusing on numerous plant species.
The UW PGSRP will allow participants to:
- Experience plant genomics research in a collaborative laboratory setting
- Learn particular research techniques
- Meet and work with UW genomics faculty, staff, and students
- Determine whether graduate school is the right career path for them
- Check out UW-Madison for graduate school opportunities.
What financial support is provided?
The program provides a stipend of $3,000, full support for travel, housing, health insurance (if needed), and a partial food allowance. Students have access to all campus libraries and facilities. There are no fees or tuition costs.
How many students do you accept?
We currently have openings for up to 15 undergraduates in the program.
How are applications reviewed?
UW PGSRP staff makes an initial screen of applicants. Files on the best-qualified applicants are forwarded to particular faculty mentors based on interests expressed by students in their applications. Each faculty member reviews the applications and chooses which individual is a 'good fit' for their research. After making a choice, each mentor contacts the student to confirm her/his interest in a specific research project and offer her/him a summer research position.
What are the minimum requirements for acceptance into the program?
Undergraduates must be currently enrolled in good standing at their home university or college, hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0, have had some basic biology courses during their college career, and provide two letters of recommendation. In addition, a statement of why they are interested in the summer research program.
What if my grade point average isn't quite 3.0? Can I still apply anyway?
We occasionally accept a promising student whos GPAs is less than 3.0. Be sure to tell us WHY you are a 'promising' student in your essays and, if possible, make sure your recommendation letters indicate that this experience would be worthwhile for you and that you'll perform successfully.
If Im going to be a sophomore, can I get in if to the program?
Preference is given to students between their junior and senior years since this will be their last chance at a program like ours. However, we accept well-qualified students at any point in their undergraduate career.
Can I enroll in summer school while participating in SRP-Bio?
No. UW PGSRP participants do research full-time (at least 40 hr/week). The idea is to enjoy an intensive research experience when you are freed from the schedules and obligations of coursework.
Can I apply to more than one other summer research programs in the bioligical sciences at UW-Madison?
Yes. Applying to the UW PGSRP will not affect your opportunities to experience summer research opportunities in other UW campus labs.
